If I search for "mil" it finds it fine. If I search for "drag", it doesn't. Vista Home Premium. Brand new out of the box 5 days ago. Behavior didn't change before and after adding the folder to the indexing service. I am completely flummoxed.
In reply to mbgillespi's post on August 13, The search somehow hinges around the separators that's why it found your "mil" It also seems that the partial name search only works with folder names but not the actual files! For years I have been coding file names with a date..
Vista search will find nothing if I search for garbage.. There is no way anybody can work like this if seach is vital to working on your computer. Search only works if you know the exact name of the file or if you start putting spacers in file names like there is no tomorrow. In reply to BoomTschaK's post on August 16, In reply to hiitsme2's post on March 21, I have a similar problem with my Vista machine using the search in Windows Explorer.

On the note of hearsay but never tried, Google's desktop bar may have an integrated search function that may allow you to index your files for searching. If you're not worried about Big Brother Google, I may recommend trying that out.
Thanks, Mix. I tried an early version of Google Desktop, and it had some aspects I liked much better than the Vista search UI, but the Big Brother aspect of it made me uninstall rather quickly. I'm cool with evil as long as it's in moderation And works heavily in my favor. JoeUser is completely free to use! It seems however that none of these settings will give a satisfactory result. It is a bit frustrating to be sitting in front of a computer but unable to perform the most basic of search operations!
Further testing revealed that I am unable to search even for something like 'important' and find a file which is titled 'an important file. In other words not only does it ONLY search from the start of the filename it does not consider separate words in a filename. I have to ask again, how many people would have considered a file 'lost' after having tried to search for it like this? How many people would take it as a given that if they search for part of the name of their file the computer would be able to find it?

I've tried to figure it for years. My friend says the whole OS has gotten unwieldy but Microsoft is tied to its "legacies" read: backward compatability. Why not just create and fix the current OS call it Windows Legacy for businesses that need it and let the rest of us move on with a stable, "just works" OS?
