I had to press the Reset button at this point. After rebooting Windows normally advanced start option and logging in I received a warning message from Windows saying that it will sort of 'self-destruct in t minus 3, 2, 1'. Just kidding! This is the message: "Windows has experienced a critical error and will restart in 1 minute. It also prevents me from further scanning the system for viruses.

I should mention that after the second reboot I quickly went into msconfig and disabled all non-Microsoft services, and also disabled autostart objects in an attempt to speed up the loading time after logging in. Note that this did not disable the shutdown, it only allowed me to gain some time so that I could attempt to 'disarm the ticking bomb' sort of. You know how it is, with Windows being generally slow when loading a bunch of software when you first log on to it.

With the faster loading Windows I now had the oppertunity to try to disable the shutdown. But it refused to disable the shutdown, with error code This was still in normal Windows mode. So I tried the safe mode. It shutts down in safe mode too! It is only in safe mode with console that the computer is not shutting down automatically. But then again, what chances do I have of removing the malware in this mode, as opposed to safe mode or the normal mode?

It was worthless. And I had no Ethernet cable long enough to make a wired connection. This meant that I was unable to update the virus definitions the database to the most current version. So I had to use the existing one that's about 7 days old. But then it took like forever to load the anti-virus database. If I unplugged the network cable the PC was fine. As soon as I plugged the network cable back in I would get the same error message and the PC would shutdown automatically.

My problem is below. I have the same issue on a handfull of win2k pro sp4 desktops. Thats are restarting, -virus outbreak in my network with the W Worm upgrated my clients to SAV The other strange thing is when i put in a usb mouse and click it immdiately crashes my computer. Just do a file search for lmhost, and host. It should find it for you.. If it doesnt, you need to open up windows explorer, and go to folder options, and uncheck the option to hide protected operating system files.

Open the file with notepad, if it had a ton of entries in it, you need to delete out a bunch of them. Or most of them… Start at the bottem, and deleted the lines. Leave about the top 5 entries. How do I go about solving the problem in this instance? When i access the saft mode there has the same problem, then shutdown with 1 minute.

Is there any solution if i cannot access the safe mode? Yep it was the hosts file for me too…… installed spybot ages ago and it uses hosts file to redirect you from dodgy websites so there was just too many for it.

Thank You. It's my pleasure really and I'm so glad that my suggestion helped you out and that the repair option actually restored the Windows registry for you.
